The little baby girl who was born with an HIV infection was cured by a female doctor who is a Christian.  Her name is Dr. Hannah Gay and she practices at the University of Mississippi Medical Center.

The baby girl experienced remission of her HIV infection after receiving antiretroviral therapy (ART) within 30 hours of her birth.

Dr. Gay and the other doctors who worked on the case agree that it was the early administration of antiviral treatment that likely resulted in a “functional cure” for the baby girl by stopping the formation of hard-to-treat viral reservoirs, which are dormant cells responsible for reigniting the infection in most HIV patients within weeks of stopping therapy.

In other words, Dr. Gay and her team of doctors believe that they were able to prevent the infant from suffering from and potentially dying from the immune deficiency disease known as AIDS by administering antiviral treatment within 30 hours of her birth.

After several rounds of repeated tests, the doctors were unable to “recover any replication competent virus” and declared the baby “functionally cured”.  They are using the term “functionally cured” as opposed to “cured” because they are still uncertain of the baby’s future health status.

Dr. Gay told CNN that the “functional cure” was unexpected.  She said “I was very much surprised.  Almost had a panic because my first thought was, ‘Oh my goodness, I’ve been treating a child who is not actually infected.”

Obviously, God has worked yet another modern day miracle and blessed our society with another cure and chose Dr. Gay a woman of faith to be a key participant in the discovery and administration of it.
